Mark’s work is unique in the world of architectural carving with wildlife scenes carved in a high relief technique that brings the animals to life on your hand carved doors, mantles or carved beds.

His work is about capturing the essence of nature. All pieces are hand carved using traditional carving methods. Every subject to be carved is studied to learn the behavior and manner of movement. The details of the subjects are then distilled down to the bare necessities. This allows Mark to carve the most important features of the subject in a natural manner. Every cut and shadow is necessary to convey the feeling of movement, keeping the carving free of unnecessary details.

All of Mark’s efforts are put towards capturing the nature of the subjects, the grace of a bird in flight or the gentle curve of a leaf on a vine. The true essence of a plant or animal is not captured in the details of every feather or leaf but in how the carving makes the viewer feel.

Mark also finishes his carvings in a unique manner. Each carving is finished using a technique Mark developed to produce a more dimensional carving creating deeper shadows and more robust forms. A dry brush staining method combined with the use of artist oils is also used to highlight forms and give additional life to carving. These extra touches add life and drama to these already unique pieces of art.

Wood invites the viewer to touch and caress the carving, creating a connection between the carving and the viewer. Every piece of wood has a character and life of its own; every piece is unique and individual.
